The concept of Moon Dubai, a $5 billion mixed-use development shaped like the moon, has been circulating since 2022, fueled by social media speculation about its location and launch date. The project, spearheaded by Moon World Resorts Inc., aims to create a unique tourism destination centered around a massive spherical structure housing a fully integrated resort. This includes convention centers, hotels, and a signature attraction: a simulated lunar surface and base, offering visitors an immersive space experience.
The project's co-founders, Michael R. Henderson and Sandra G. Matthews, emphasize Moon's focus on an adult-oriented experience, differentiating it from a typical theme park. The development also includes a large lagoon and park, surrounded by luxury residences, creating a "smart city" environment. While Dubai is a strong contender, the company is open to other locations in the Middle East, including Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar.
Henderson acknowledges the global attention, but clarifies that the project is not a direct construction venture. Instead, Moon World Resorts operates as a design studio and intellectual property licensor, with plans to license up to ten Moon projects worldwide. The timeline for the first Moon opening is estimated around 2032, with construction beginning in 2027. The project aims to make space tourism accessible, with the lunar surface experience priced at $500 for 90 minutes.
The project's success hinges on securing government backing and a suitable regional development partner. Henderson suggests that only a few developers, such as Emaar, Aldar, or Qatari Diar, possess the scale and mandate to bring Moon to fruition. While the UAE is a strong contender due to its infrastructure and tourism volume, the final location and timeline remain subject to securing the right partnerships.
