Lakshmi Mittal, the executive chairman of ArcelorMittal with a net worth exceeding $23 billion, has purchased a luxurious mansion in Dubai's Emirates Hills, often called the "Beverly Hills of Dubai". The Baroque-style residence, initially listed for around $200 million (Dh735 million) in 2023, was sold for approximately half that price (around Dh367 million). This acquisition places Mittal among the buyers of Dubai's most expensive residential properties.
This purchase highlights the booming Dubai property market, which has attracted numerous wealthy individuals since the pandemic. Property prices in Dubai have surged significantly in recent years, outpacing global trends. The luxury market continues to thrive, with record sales of homes valued over $10 million. Other billionaires, such as Mukesh Ambani, have also invested in Dubai real estate.
Mittal's move to purchase property in Dubai comes as he, along with other wealthy individuals, explores residency options outside the UK. Tax reforms in the UK have made the country less appealing to the global elite. Mittal, 74, has been considering leaving the UK due to recent tax changes, including the scrapping of the preferential tax regime for non-domiciled residents.
Mittal's potential departure would be a significant blow to the UK's business sector. He has been a prominent figure in Britain's billionaire community for over two decades. Despite considering leaving the UK, there are no plans to relocate LK Advisers, the Mittals' investment firm, from London.
